How to Setup an Amazon Giveaway to Drive More Sales and Profits

Who doesn’t love freebies? One of the great strategies to increase sales and profits for your Amazon business is running a giveaway. Detailed here are 8 simple steps you can follow to create your own Amazon giveaway.

Step 1 — Sign in to your Seller Central and navigate to ‘Promotions’ under ‘Advertising’ tab. You will find the ‘Giveaway’ option as shown in the screenshot below. Click the ‘Create’ button to start your very own giveaway.

Step 2 — You will then be prompt to either search for or choose a product you want to use as a prize in the giveaway.

Step 3 — Select your giveaway type from 4 different selections provided by Amazon.

[1]Sweepstakes — Where the prize will be awarded randomly to winner(s) after the giveaway has ended.

[2]Random Instant Win — This is one of my favorite types of giveaway to run where the you select chances of winning for participants. For instance, each participant has a 1 in 1000 chance of winning a prize. You’d want to make the winning odds logical for participants to enter and also for you get enough exposure for your products so test it out and find that sweet spot.

[3]Lucky Number Instant Win — This is another great giveaway to run where you select a lucky number or a few numbers depending the amount the prizes you’re giving away.

[4]First-come, First-served — This giveaway is pretty much self-explanatory. I wouldn’t suggest running this type of giveaway because you won’t get enough product exposure. For instance, you are giving away 3 prizes and in the end, only 3 participants will know about your product. Doesn’t make sense to run this type of giveaway, well, at least for me.

Step 4 — Enter the number of prizes you are willing to giveaway. This is entirely up to you and I personally find that 3 is the magic number.

Step 5 — Grow your audience with the following criteria for entrants. I personally prefer using the watch a YouTube video option as I can grow my audience on YouTube by getting entrants to watch my product review video. Tweet a message is great as well to gain more exposure for your product. Be sure to use the right hashtags for your product and brand.

Step 6— Once you’ve selected the type of giveaway you’d want to run. Now you need to choose the duration for the giveaway. After countless A/B testings, I’d highly suggest nothing below 3 days and nothing more than 5 days. Why? Because 1 or 2 days isn’t enough to get traction and anything more than 5 days, the number of entrants will be saturated. Also, you’d want to start your giveaway on a weekday depending on the duration of your giveaway to gain more exposure.

Pro Tip: Remember to tick the checkbox ‘Allow Amazon to make this giveaway discoverable to other Amazon customers’ to get more eyeballs on your product.

Click the ‘Next’ button once done.

Giveaway Share Functionality

Step 7— Now, here’s the important part of the giveaway. You’ll need to enter details as shown in the screenshot below. Note: Depending on the type of giveaway, you will be prompt to enter slightly different details.

[1]Giveaway title — It’s important to have a simple yet attention grabbing title. E.g. “Win a FREE bottle of Glucosamine for Dogs!”

[2]Name — Enter your business name here.

[3]Image — Select an image that is congruent to your product. I highly suggest the main image for your product for consistency.

[4]Welcome message — This is where your great copywriting skills come in handy. Start with a thought provoking question or statement, e.g. “Looking to get rid of wrinkles underneath your eyes? We have the solution! Enter to Win…”. This is the time to let your creativity run wild!

[5]Post-entry message — Participants will see this message once they’ve entered the giveaway. Here, you can thank them for entering and give out a coupon code to promote your product. For instance, “Thanks for entering the giveaway, winners will be announced as soon as the giveaway ends so stay tuned. In the meantime, here’s a COUPON CODE to enjoy 20% off our…”. Again, use your copywriting skills to entice entrants to check out your products and make a purchase.

[6]Win message — Enter winning message for the winner here. Random Instant Win and Lucky Number Win giveaways allowed you to enter a Loser Message of which is perfect to generate sales. You can have a loser message for instance, “Sorry you didn’t win this time. However, you can still Win by taking advantage of our COUPON CODE and get 20% off…”

Step 8 — Once you have entered all relevant details for the giveaway, finally you can proceed to checkout and pay for the prizes.

Pro Tip: Ensure that the ‘Remove Share Buttons’ checkbox is not ticked. The goal here is to boost sales and profits and to do so, we want as many eyeballs on the giveaway as possible.

You will receive an email from Amazon notifying you that your giveaway is live once payment has been received. You can then share it amongst your audience to further increase the engagement.

Be sure to keep track of your metrics (e.g. sales volume) during the giveaway and also once the giveaway has ended so you know exactly which type of giveaways work for you.
